Interesting claim in the Herald Sun online today about some jobs disappearing from GE Money.

Here’s the opening two paragraphs of the story:

LENDER GE Money is set to sack 136 staff in Victoria after scrapping large parts of its lending for homes, cars and small businesses.

The company announced today 335 jobs in its 4500-strong workforce would go Australia-wide, with the bulk of them going from Victoria.

Since when is 136/335 “the bulk” of the jobs? That’s under 41 per cent. In other words, 59 per cent of the jobs being scrapped will be from outside Victoria.

Now there are no other figures quoted in the story, so presumably they mean that no other state has a higher percentage of jobs lost than Victoria: that is, the 59 per cent is shared across several states. But that isn’t stated, so I’m only guessing.

41 per cent vs 59 per cent … it’s quirky maths to claim that is “the bulk” without providing more detail!
